Assistant Athletic Trainer/Massage Therapist

Who are we hiring?

The Assistant Athletic Trainer / Massage Therapist will assist with the coordination of all athletic training, massage therapy and the overall sports performance and wellness needs of professional players for the Rangers. They will also be responsible for assisting with the coordination and administration of all player health care in collaboration with the team physicians and consulting physicians, working closely and communicating with the respective Head Athletic Trainers, including massage therapy sessions as required. This position plays an important role in preventing and treating player injuries as well as enhancing the overall performance of each team. This individual will create a safe working environment of trust and care, which encourages athletes to engage in their overall health and safety.

What will you do?

  • Provides expert training services to prevent, treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries and related health conditions sustained by the players for the Rangers.
  • Provide bench coverage for all home and road practices, along with secondary bench coverage for all home and road games, directed by the Head Athletic Trainer
  • Coordinate the provision of services with the NYR Head Athletic Trainer, Team Physicians, and other medical service providers as needed
  • Communicate effectively with Head Athletic Trainers to maximize team performance while being mindful of health issues and concerns
  • Perform consistent quality massage therapy sessions as required/directed. 
  • Design specific sessions based on player’s individual needs in conjunction with programs designed by head athletic trainer, associate athletic trainer and strength & conditioning coach. 
  • Document daily treatments provided, assess soft tissue quality progress, and relay findings with rest of medical/performance staff. 
  • Under the direction of the head athletic trainer, assist in post-practice and post-game recovery efforts including stretching, treatment, hydrotherapy & hydration. 
  • Assist medical and performance staff with duties on the road. 
  • Exhibit utmost professionalism and communication skills, as well to contribute to the positive approach of the workspace. 
  • Oversee practice and game protective equipment distribution and retrieval as well as game day equipment preparation and set up.
  • Ensure daily sanitization of training room following COVID and Health protocols
  • Assist Head Athletic Trainers with game day player preparation, in game injury management, and on bench hydration.
  • Collaborate with nutritionist and other sport medicine resources to educate players and empower them to make positive and effective diet and supplement choices
  • Assist Head Athletic Trainers with the management of player medical files, insurance claims, processing and follow-up of league mandated drug testing and education, concussion protocol assessments, and other athletic training related tasks as directed by Head Athletic Trainer
  • Assist with team travel preparation and baggage logistics in coordination with the Head Athletic Trainers
  • Oversee ordering and purchasing of medical equipment for the training room, Arena and practice site.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainers

 What will you need to suceed?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training
  • NATABOC Certified
  • Completion of program accredited by American massage therapy association, or similar national or international governing body. 
  • Must be state licensed in massage therapy or eligible for licensure.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree
    • ABPTS certification
    • CSCS certification
  • Experience working in professional sports
  • Ability to maintain player/medical confidentiality. 
  • Other certifications in the field of sports medicine/performance desired. 
  • CPR and first aid certified. 
  • 5-10 years of experience; working with elite athletes highly desired. 
  • Must possess excellent skill in standard massage modalities (Swedish, deep tissue); knowledge in advanced techniques (trigger point, active release technique, etc) highly desired. 
  • Willingness and ability to work long and flexible hours and to travel extensively. 
  • Commitment to continuing education to stay current in field. 
  • Proficient computer skills.

Pay Range
$115,000$115,000 USD
